Honeymoon Heaven

So, you’ve booked your Highland wedding ceremony, but now you need somewhere suitably romantic for the honeymoon. Well, you won’t go far wrong with one of Mary’s Thatched Cottages in Elgol, Isle of Skye.

The cottages go back six generations in Andrew Sim’s family. He and his wife, Mary, have been operating the four cottages, which are all named after family members, for seven years now and will give you a very warm welcome.

Tigh Phadruig and Tigh Mairi (tigh means house in Gaelic) were original ruins on the croft (smallholding). Tigh Phadruig was the very first school in the village, where pupils came with a penny per week and a bit of peat for the fire each day to help pay for their education. Tigh Mairi was a hay shed, but prior to that it was believed to have been a dwelling house.

Tigh Seonag, named after Andrew’s grandmother, has stone which was given to us by Andrew’s cousin who lives across the road from the family; this cottage was where the preacher who taught in the school lived. Tigh Lachie (Andrew’s cousin), is the only cottage that has stone which was bought from within the village and recycled. Sadly Seonag and Lachie have both passed on, however they are remembered and honoured through their eponymous cottages.

Each cottage sleeps four in one double king sized boxed bed and two single beds up in a gallery, accessed by a folding step-ladder. The cottages are well kitted out with modern facilities and are the perfect hideway for your first few days of wedded bliss – you’ll even get a bottle of champagne on arrival!
